St. Louis Music is now the exclusive U.S. distributor of Forestone Japan, a synthetic reed manufacturer that has already made deep gains in Asia and Europe. The reeds are a mixture of polypropylene resin and cellulose wood fiber – and over 50 percent of that is bamboo. The reeds are available for clarinet players and S A T B saxophone players.
“The quest for a synthetic reed that really responds to the player has been elusive,” says St. Louis Music’s executive Craig Denny. “But as a player myself, I’ve found the reeds offer everything quality traditional reeds offer, but with a consistency that hasn’t yet been achieved.”
“This partnership with St. Louis Music was given the green light this summer, and marks the next step in the company’s rapid growth,” says Forestone president Lars Huesler. “Since we entered into a partnership at the 2010 Musikmesse Frankfurt show, things have moved forward fast. We’re extremely excited because we desired to be in the U.S. market, and all we needed was the right partner.”
The reeds are non-toxic, odorless, and fully recyclable. They are packaged singly for individual sale. Forestone reeds vibrate more like a cane reed than other synthetics and unlike other synthetics, players noticed that they can easily achieve good sound production in the higher registers. Another aspect of the appeal is a molding and refining process that gets the tip down to a pristine 0.1 mm width, creating a good-looking brown reed that sounds great. The product took years to develop. All reeds come in strengths 1–5 in half sizes.
Forestone is already working on new “jazz cut” reeds for alto and tenor saxophones, in addition to new reeds for bass clarinet and an enhanced professional line-up for B-flat clarinets.
